When I open a file in Illustrator CS6, I have to then click in the document to "select" it...

When I open a file and try to select, copy, or paste objects within it, nothing happens.  I have to click in the document (so as to select it), but then it zooms out to the max with an error noise.  Then I have to zoom back in and continue with my task.  Of course, I can just open a document and click in it before I proceed, but it really screws with my flow when I'm flippin' between open and closed files trying to copy and paste things quickly, which I do a lot of.  You'd think a file you just opened would automatically be "selected".  Nothing in Preferences appears culpable, so is it perhaps an OS deal?  Or is that just the way it is?
