Multiple file place into multiple artboards

I am using Illustrator CC and attempting to place multiple files into specific artboards. For my purposes, it would be much more productive to be able to select all of the images I want to relink and click on the "multiple images" link in the top toolbar. This does work, however, not how I need it to. I will be more specific.

I have 8 different artboards, and 8 different images. Each artboard contains one image, and will need to be switched out quite often and then resaved with a new filename. Just for testing purposes, I have created images with the numbers 1-8 on them, to keep track of where they're being placed. As I select my images and then replace the links, the images come in out of order. They should be in the same order as the artboards, 1 through 8, but they are actually ordered "8, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7". The first artboard always seems to be linked with the last image selected. That is fine, and at least I can see what is happening, but selecting the first image last every time is not intuitive, and I see a lot of mistakes happening. Can anyone explain why this is happening, and more importantly, how to fix it?

Also, while I'm talking about it, why is it that we can place multiple files at once via file>place, whereas when images are already pre-selected to be relinked, the multiple file place requires clicking the new links individually?
