How to replace existing colours in a vector with different (yet equally complimentary) colours

Hi All,

I have a vector where the colours are predominantly that of skintones.

I'd like to change the color scheme completely, but only to a colour scheme where the quality of the image can still be maintained (ie, shading, depth etc)

For example, here is a vector of Heath Ledger: http://i.imgur.com/LZKW29g.png

And here is my lousy attempt to change some of the colours around: http://i.imgur.com/ObEgMPx.png

Whilst colouful, my attempt clearly compromises the quality of the original image, not doing it justice.

My question is this, is there a way of firstly ascertaining how many colours and what colours are being used in the orginial image? Once done, is there then a way of generating a group of colours (say of the blue family), where each colour is replaced with another:

ie.

#E4B2A1 can be replaced with #00FFFF

#BA7C69 can be replaced with #0094FF

..and so on.

Hopefully ive explained myself ok.

Any assistance would be immensely appreciated
