I'm going to state it up front that I am very new to AI and have just recently begun learning it. So I'm sorry if my issue is silly or something that I'm doing wrong.. But I'm at a complete loss as to why this is happening!
My problem is that I am trying to cut a circle in half using the knife tool:

everytime I go to use the knife tool (on anything) this is what happens:

Those lines jutting out of the circle are where I tried to cut it. Why does this happe?, is it a setting I have on? I have tried deleting my preference folder in case it was a weird setting that was saved somehow, but it still does that. It's driving me crazy.
Any thoughts or help on this would be greatly appreciated.
