Clipping Mask Issue

Hello all,

First time on the forum, and as you can probably guess, I'm fairly new to the program for asking a novice question. It's been ages since I took a photoshop class in high school, so we'll see if we can get this to work. I'm using Illustrator CC and I have a classic clipping mask scenario where I would like to take an existing image I've made and "cookie cut" it with the shape I want it to be. I figured it may be helpful to show my steps as well as my layers, then maybe someone can see something I'm doing wrong. Here is the artwork I want to "cut."

Capture 1.PNG

And here is the desired shape:

Capture 2.PNG

Select both layers with the path on top, and Object>Clipping Mask>Make:

Capture3.PNG

Annnnnd the result...

Capture4.PNG

Kind of on the right track, but as you can see, the image doesn't end up with the rough edge I desired from the desired shape. Any suggestions what's going on here? Alternatively I've tried using various pathfinder functions, but that seems to have an even more distasteful effect.

Since I'm on here, if I want to keep an image a vector, and use it on other programs or online for logo printing on shirts etc. is there a format I can save my artwork in, that's universally useable? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS!
