How do I go back to basic 1-pt. black stroke?

Apologies for so many questions over the last couple of weeks. I really do try to find the answer in the documentation before posting.

I modified a stroke in a CS5.5 document yesterday with the Width Tool, and now every new stroke I draw, with any tool, has the color and shape of that one stroke I modified. The control panel shows a 1-pt. black stroke with the Uniform stroke profile, no fill, but all my strokes are red, going from one point at one end to four points at the other. I've worked for an hour trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Again, many thanks for whatever help I get.

Rob

P. S. Since posting, I've seen I can add a new layer where the stroke goes back to the default. But on the layer that has the modified stroke, any new stroke has that stroke's characteristics.
