I'm not sure what version of Illustrator introduced multiple artboards—and I apparently don't use AI often enough to have clued in at the time—but (now running CS6) I'm using them and I have to say they're incredibly helpful and handy.
I remember this being a strength of Macromedia Freehand over a very young Adobe Illustrator – multiple 'pages'. I'd just like to say how amazing it is for AI to have this feature, as well as how it has been implemented.
