Need to undot the i

I am trying to blend two letters in Illustrator - an i and ?.  It will work by first making the letters an outline, but the dots for both letters make it appear as there are 4 objects instead of 2.  Is there anyway to remove the dots from each and still keep it as text to do the blend with?
