Is it possible to use 9-slice Scaling on bitmap-based symbol?

9-slice scaling doesn't appear to work when applied to symbols based on an embedded raster image.

Is this a known limitation or am I doing something wrong?

It works fine with vector-based symbols. I'm using Illustrator CS6.
