Tracing images - I'm not doing it right.

Hi,
I'm using Image Trace to trace a black and white shape and I need some pointers on the procedure as I'm getting unwanted results.

I want to end up with one shape, yet (especially it seems with complex shapes) I seem to end up with a stacked duplicate. When I use 'expand' on the result to make it editable I've tried wtih both 'fills' and 'object' checked and also just 'fills', and this doesn't seem to make a difference either way.

In my Image Trace options I've black and white settings with Create Fills checked (I want no strokes), and I also have Ignore White selected because I don't want a border around my shapes which are black on white.

Can someone explain how I get the trace expanded with just one shape per shape (as it were). When I 'release compound' or ungroup I see theres' a double shape. It's unworkable as I don't have time to delete the copy.

Any help much appreciated

(thanks stupid text box for making this process slower than it need be)
