How can I create this repeating fill?

Hello

In the attached image, I'm trying to create the repeating stroke that fills these interlocking shapes...I've done the interlocking using repeated copies of the original chainlink, dividing them on top of each other, and changing the fill color...

But what would be a good strategy to create this repetition of the stroke?
